The restrictions of having only two runways that crossed each other experienced become obvious and governments grappled with Sydney's airport ability for decades. At some point, the controversial selection to make a third runway was manufactured. The 3rd runway was parallel to the present runway 16/34, completely on reclaimed land from Botany Bay.
